Alessandro Scarlatti | Stabat Mater

Stabat Mater dolorosa,
juxta crucem lacrimosa,
dum pendebat Filius.

Cujus animam gementem,
contristantem et dolentem,
pertransivit gladius.

O quam tristis et afflicta
fuit illa benedicta
Mater Unigeniti!

Quis est homo, qui non fleret,
Christi Mater si videret
in tanto supplicio?

Quis non posset contristari,
piam Matrem contemplari
dolentem cum Filio?

Vidit suum dulcem natum
morientem desolatum,
dum emisit spiritum.

Pia Mater, fons amoris,
me sentire vim doloris
fac ut tecum lugeam.

Sancta Mater, istud agas,
crucifixi fige plagas,
cordi meo valide.

Fac ut ardeat cor meum
in amando Christum Deum,
ut sibi complaceam.

Tui Nati vulnerati,
tam dignati pro me pati,
poenas mecum divide.

Juxta crucem tecum stare,
te libenter sociare
in planctu desidero.

Fac ut portem Christi mortem,
passionis fac consortem,
et plagas recolere.

Fac me plagis vulnerari,
cruce hac inebriari
ob amorem Filii.

Inflammatus et accensus,
per te Virgo, sim defensus
in die judicii.

Fac me cruce custodiri
morte Christi praemuniri
confoveri gratia.

Quando corpus morietur
fac ut animae donetur
paradisi gloria. Amen.

Stabat Mater was composed by Alessandro Scarlatti in 1724 as one of his last works. From the Adagio at the beginning (shocking from the counterpoint and harmonics point of view) up to the final Amen, it is a compositional masterpiece, very varied and at the same time extremely profound piece.

On Good Friday, we bring you a recording of this composition, as it was performed at the St. Wenceslas Music Festival on September 25, 2020 in the Church of St. Jan Nepomucký in Ostrava – Staré Bělá.

Johann Sebastian Bach | St John Passion (Ich folge dir gleichfalls)

The B-flat major is often described as “joyful, magnificent, amusing, modest”, or as “clear conscience, merry love, and hope for a better world”. It is no wonder that Johann Sebastian Bach chose this key for a soprano (!) aria in which Simon Peter bravely follows the arrested Jesus to Caiaphas’ palace, but denies him three times before the rooster crows.

Simona ŠATUROVÁ | soprano
Jana SEMERÁDOVÁ | flauto traverso
Jiřina DVOŘÁKOVÁ-MAREŠOVÁ | organ

Ich folge dir gleichfalls
Mit freudigen Schritten
Und lasse dich nicht,
Mein Leben, mein Licht.
Befördre den Lauf
Und höre nicht auf,
Selbst an mir zu ziehen,
Zu schieben, zu bitten.
