Secular, earthly love has always been associated with the purely human, physical aspects of love, whereas sacred or divine love could be labeled metaphysical, a sort of transcendental love between humanity and the deity, almost a purely spiritual love.

Since Western thinking has constantly oscillated between these two extremes, trying to solve or at least explain and justify this philosophical dilemma, it is no wonder that it has become very fertile ground for artistic expression, whether in the visual arts, in poetry, or in music.
