BAROQUE SOIRÉES

SPRING SERIES 2024

All Roads Lead to Rome

The 24th edition of the Collegium Marianum Baroque Soirées will take us to Rome – a city of cities, that experienced an extraordinary artistic flowering at the end of the seventeenth century and beginning of the eighteenth century. Timeless musical works were written there, the greatest musical personalities of the time met there and new musical genres were created there. Rome was a bottomless well of inspiration for the creators of Baroque operas, oratorios and cantatas, whether themes were drawn from the fates of the historical figures in ancient or early Christian Rome or from the mythological stories in which the Romans had believed. Rome is associated with composers of such renown as Arcangelo Corelli, Alessandro Scarlatti, Antonio Caldara, Antonio Vivaldi and Georg Friedrich Händel. Crucial drivers of this music upsurge were the enlightened and music-loving patrons in whose service the music masters worked. The most important supporters were Queen Christina I of Sweden, Prince Francesco Maria Ruspoli and Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni, who became also the patron of the famous Antonio Vivaldi.

Welcome to the Spring Series concerts, which will feature works by composers associated with Rome and will present their influence on the most prominent figures of the European musical scene of the time.
